No, you don't "have" to have the latest photocopier in the office, or a fax machine with all the bells and whistles no one will ever use. Especially if it is not in constant use (as they wouldn't be with most small businesses), you can get away with a lower end model, or even purchasing used.

And don't hesitate to bring equipment from home! If you have a fax machine at home that you only receive about 2 faxes a year, why not bring it into the office to use until there is enough cash flow to justify a new one, or you decide to just use it until the day it dies.

Be wary of salespeople who encourage you to buy new equipment - after all, many of them work on commission, and the more they can get you to spend, the better. And they will be full of reasons why you "have" to buy brand new. But used equipment, or even a new but older model can do just as well.
